Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic energy to stimulate the nerve cells in the brain to reduce depression symptoms. It is a treatment option for patients who aren’t getting satisfactory results from their medication.

How it works (TMS)

In people with depression, neurotransmitters become depleted or dysfunctional and communication between mood regions is disrupted. Increasing the amount of neurotransmitters is an effective, established approach to treating depression. This can be done either chemically (with pharmaceuticals) or electrically (TMS). While some people can gain relief from their symptoms through depression therapy, medication, or a combination of these treatments- many others don’t find the relief they’re looking for. TMS therapy uses recurring magnetic energy pulses to stimulate and activate the nerve cells that regulate mood and motivation. During treatment, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your left prefrontal cortex (forehead). The coil delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression.
